History of Atoms

The ancient Greeks had many questions about atoms, but the most important was "is matter continuous or discontinuous?" The two philosophers argued about whether or not the person could eventually reach a point were matter could be divided no farther. There names were Leucippus and his student Democritus. Democritus was the first person to use the word "Atoms".

(But he spelt it "Atomos" whih means "in devisable")

The particle theory was too developed for another 2,000 years. In about the later 1700's to early 1800's an english philosopher, John Dalto put the theory of atoms into modern terms. After he purposed his theory of atoms it started to under go his dramaic change. (Encyclopedia of science, vol. A: 1)

Structure of an Atom

Atoms are made of smaller particles called protons, neutrons, and electrons. A Proton has a positive charge, a Neutron has a neutral charge, and an Electron has a negative charge. An atom consists of a nucleus surrounded by one or more electrons.

Physical Dimensions

An atom can be discribed with three properties: Moses, electrical change, and spin. The actual mass of a proton is (continue later)... or 0.000,000,000,000,000,000,000,001,6753 grams. The mass of an electron is about 0.00055 amu. The total mass of an atom is equal to the mass of all protons. ( Encyclopedia of Science vol.A: 1)
